Why I Serve

The Tapestry, Anne, Service Council

I’ve always loved thinking about life as an unfinished tapestry. Every individual is a single strand of thread. When alone, these strands are weak and unimpressive. They lack vibrancy, but have the potential to add unique diversity to the tapestry. As people connect and develop relationships, their individual strands begin to weave together. Sometimes becoming tangled and requiring a gentle hand to undo the painful knots and other times becoming smoothly linked together, developing a strength that only comes from the interconnectedness of the human experience.

I think service is a lot like this tapestry. It connects, strengthens, and gently untangles the mess of life. I’ve learned that we aren’t here to wander through life alone. If we were, just think about what chaos would ensue in the tapestry. There would be no rhyme or reason, just wandering loose threads that could never be woven together. Instead, we have a whole lifetime to weave our lives together while building relationships and learning to rely on the strength and experience of others. Service strengthens the thread, making it easier to weave and less likely to break under pressure. Service links people who otherwise would have never met and in doing so creates new designs and beautiful patterns. Service makes it possible to develop those connections and create the vibrancy of color and various textures that are needed to create a masterpiece.
